“Unsurpassed Quality”
O'Neill Epic Back Zip wetsuit

The Epic is a robust entry-level suit with many high-end O'Neill features. Featuring 100% Ultraflex Neoprene, which is both lightweight and durable. Another great characteristic is the double seal neck closure, which is comfortable and helps prevent any unwanted water from entering the suit.

The Epic comes equipped with O'Neill's lumbar seamless design (large paneling) and a re-engineered covert blackout zip to ensure maximum ease of entry and flexibility. Lastly, the chest and back of the suit are covered in a smooth skin paneling. The paneling acts as a wind blocker and keeps the suit warm by trapping the heat from the sun.

The Epic has been a shop staple for years when it comes to surfing cold water and has successfully stood the test of time. We see everyone from first-time buyers to seasoned veterans who are looking for a backup suit reaching for the Epic based on its proven dependability. There is an Epic for nearly every body size! In general, O’Neill runs true to size with a broad-shouldered fit. If you are looking for a warm, affordable wetsuit from a dependable company, this is your suit.

Vissla Seven Seas Wetsuit - $219.95+

“Everything You Need”

Vissla Seven Seas Wetsuit

With the catchphrase: “everything you need in a wetsuit and nothing you don’t,” Vissla prides itself on quality products that get the job done. Let’s take a quick look at the Seven Seas line, which is offered in everything from 3/2mm back zips to a hooded burly 6mm. Under the minimal branding is the limestone-based Super Stretch neoprene. To the touch, the neoprene is baby skin smooth and has the ideal amount of stretch.

The Seven Seas is produced with two different internal liners depending on the thickness. All models incorporate the Fever Fiber lining, which has a cream and maroon appearance. This liner is lightweight and insulates more thoroughly compared to similarly priced suits. The 5mm and 6mm models also include an additional Eco Fiber liner in the waist and legs of the suit.

Similar to some of the other suits listed on this blog, the Seven Seas seams are GBS and internally taped with Super Stretch Neo 3.0 tape. We’ve found the suit comfortable and toasty warm with this seam construction. The chest zip entry can run on the snug side but offers excellent protection from flushing. The Seven Seas packs in the essential features for a quality suit at an affordable price.

Billabong Absolute Wetsuit - $229.95+

“High Tech Graphene Liner”

Billabong Absolute Wetsuit

Billabong makes an excellent entry-level series of suits called the Absolute that gives surfers a flexible, warm wetsuit at a price almost everyone can afford. The Absolute features Billabong's partially recycled Superlite Foam, a stretchy, comfortable material and environmentally friendly material. This Superlite rubber is produced from upcycled car tires and sealed with a water-based adhesive. There's a Graphene liner on the inside of these suits as well. This is the same liner you'll find on Billabong's most expensive suits and provides excellent heat retention. On the Absolute, you'll find the liner in the core and legs.

Overall you can't go wrong with any of these options, and the hooded version of the Absolute has been a shop favorite here since its release. We like the Absolute so much that Billabong made a Cleanline exclusive 5/4 non-hooded back zip model. This particular model is our go-to rental wetsuit for customers surfing in the cold waters of Northern Oregon. The Absolute is available in various sizes, entry systems, and thicknesses. We think this suit is a steal at an affordable price with its high-tech features.

Rip Curl Dawn Patrol - $259.95+

“Affordable High-End Features”

Rip Curl Dawn Patrol Wetsuit

Rip Curl’s Dawn Patrol has consistently been one of our top-selling wetsuits. You can grab most of the different versions of this highly reviewed Dawn Patrol for under $300; only the 5/4 hooded model tops out at $319.95. Rip Curl has consistently improved the model line, and the latest edition features high-end components at an affordable price tag. The suit comes standard with the 5th generation of Elastomax Superstretch Neoprene (E5). Apart from being more flexible, this material is also 20% lighter and 10% warmer than previous models.

One of the defining features of the Dawn Patrol is the super warm fleece lining they have been using for years called the “flash-lining,” which runs from the torso down through to the legs, providing warmth and comfort while minimizing dry time. The Dawn Patrol back zip model has a system to prevent water from entering the zipper and flushing through the suit. The suit features internally taped seams in high-stress areas—this type of seam construction results in a better water seal and overall durability.

We recommend sizing up if in between sizes since Rip Curl tends to run small. The Dawn Patrol model line comes in rubber ranging from 3/2 back zips to 5/4 hooded cold water options: perfect if you’re recreating in water temperatures ranging from 45 F up to the high 60s F.

Buell RB2 Wetsuit - $299.95+

“High Quality Seam Construction”

Buell RB2 Wetsuit

The Buell RB2 tops out as the most expensive suit on this list. Is it worth the price? Based on our experience thus far, we think so! The RB2 is a popular choice for surfers looking for an affordable cold-water wetsuit. In fact, the RB2 sits high on the list of best-selling wetsuits of 2023, right behind O’Neill’s and Patagonia’s high-performance suits.

The RB2 packs in multiple features not often found on competitor suits. The buttery soft Ninja neoprene, coupled with a blue Thermal lining on the inside, offers the ideal blend of comfort, warmth, and flexibility. In addition, the seam construction on this suit is next level. Exterior fluid “sizzle” seamweld on the outside seams ensures the suit stays watertight on those big surf days. On the inside, you’ll find that the high-stress areas of the suit are fortified with internal seam tape, which adds to the overall durability of the RB2.

When it comes to sizing, the RB2 is a rarity with its offerings from XS to four variations of Medium (MS: Medium Short, M: Medium, ML: Medium Large, and MT: Medium Tall) to XXXL. We’ve found Buell to fit true to size with a slightly roomier cut in the chest and shoulders.

Take a look at our full review of the Buell RB2 Wetsuit.

Highlights and Features

  • Limestone based neoprene
  • Exterior fluid seamweld
  • Slant zip entry
  • Tough kneepads
