Wave of Innovation: Billabong and Cleanline Surf’s Neoprene-Free Wetsuit

Starting in 2021, we’ve teamed up with Billabong each year, offering one-of-a-kind wetsuits sold exclusively at Cleanline Surf. Using our cold water knowledge, combined with Billabong’s team of expert designers, these custom-designed suits have become best sellers over the years, both within the PNW and beyond.

If you’re a surf enthusiast, you know that the right gear can make all the difference in your performance and comfort. That’s why we’re stoked to announce a groundbreaking update in 2024 to our unique Billabong collaboration wetsuit. The suits received a massive upgrade in the form of a neoprene-free rubber called Natural Rubber, which we’ll get into more specifics below. This partnership has birthed two quality, affordable cold water wetsuits that blend affordability with eco-friendly technology.

    Pros

    • Rare neoprene-free suit for under $300
    • Uses recycled materials throughout
    • Large variety of sizes offered

    Cons

    • Only made in a 5/4 backzip
    • Partially lined

Natural Rubber: A New Wave of Sustainability and Performance

Back in 2020, Billabong released its first neoprene-free wetsuit: the premium Furnace Natural, made from Yulex natural rubber. Due to the high-end rubber, the suit featured a costly price tag, which was a barrier for eco-conscious surfers on a budget. Over the next three years, Billabong's design team continued to develop their own unique rubber. Then, in 2023, Billabong debuted its very own Natural Rubber: made from a proprietary formula of 85% rubber sourced from FSC-certified forests, soybean oil, and recycled carbon black.

New for 2024, Billabong now uses Natural Rubber in nearly its entire wetsuit line. That same Natural Rubber is also now found in our very own Billabong Cleanline wetsuits for men and women. Billabong's latest version of Natural Rubber is their lightest and most flexible yet. We’ve had the chance to test it ourselves, and it truly outperforms other neoprene-free options in terms of cost, performance, comfort, and flexibility.

Sustainability and performance are no longer mutually exclusive in the ever-evolving world of wetsuits and surf gear. The Billabong Cleanline collaboration stands as a testament to the new eco-friendly standard, offering surfers a top-notch and affordable wetsuit experience while treading lightly on the planet.

You Spoke, We Heard: Wide Range of Sizes Offered

Over the years, Cleanline Surf has taken customer feedback to heart. We recognize the need for a more generous offering of cold-water wetsuit sizes. As the surf industry continues to grow and diversify, we’re grateful that Billabong was on board as well.

The women’s Synergy Natural Upcycler is produced in sizes XS, S, M, LS, L, LT, XLS, XL, XXL, XXXL, and XXXXL. This suit is unique because it’s incredibly rare to find a women’s 5mm suit in such a generous array of sizes, especially in XLS and 4XL. Billabong women’s suits are cut slightly wider throughout, making them a first choice for athletic shapes and those with a fuller chest.

On the men’s side, it’s a similar situation. Trying to find larger-sized men’s cold water suits is nearly impossible. We’re proud to offer a size range of S, MS, M, MT, LS, L, LT, XLS, XL, XXL, and XXL. With its true-to-size fit and a slightly wider cut in the shoulders and chest, there’s a good chance you’ll find a size that works for you.
