Wetsuit Industry Insights and Updates

  • The majority of wetsuit manufacturers now use more sustainable practices in their production processes, dope-dyed yarns, water-based glues for seams, and fully or partially recycled materials in the liner, exterior fabric, and rubber.

  • Some wetsuit manufacturers are changing out the sizing on their women's suits, going from numbered sizes to letter sizes. For example, some brands now refer to a size 4 as a S (small), a 6 as a M (medium) and so on.

  • The Flashbomb Fusion stands out with its "stitch-free" seam construction. Read more below about what that means in terms of performance and durability.

Pros
  • Flexible limestone neoprene
  • Warm TDC liner
  • Durable Channel Flex exterior
  • Fair price
Cons

Our Take:
The Xcel Women’s Comp X 3/2mm wetsuit may come at a slightly higher price point than other women’s wetsuits, but it's easily one of the best investments for female surfers seeking high-end performance and long-lasting warmth. This premium wetsuit is packed with innovative features designed to keep you warm, flexible, and comfortable in a wide range of water conditions.

The exterior is crafted with Channel Flex technology, offering enhanced freedom of movement without sacrificing durability. Inside, you’ll find a combination of Thermo Dry Celliant and Thermo Dry Infrared lining, two standout features that reflect and retain body heat while drying quickly between sessions—ideal for chilly dawn patrols or extended time in the water.

The easy chest zip entry system makes getting in and out of the suit a breeze, while FusionX seam taping adds enhanced durability and water resistance. Whether you're paddling out on a crisp spring morning or spending hours chasing waves, the Women’s Comp X delivers on both warmth and performance.

“Latest update with long-lasting reputation”

Rip Curl Women's Flashbomb 3/2 Chest-Zip Wetsuit 6
Pros
  • Recently updated
  • Durable 100% taping
  • Warm E7 Flashling
  • Key pocket
Cons
  • Not the best for broader body types
  • Similar to the Flashbomb Fusion

Our Take:
The Rip Curl Flashbomb 3/2 has recently been updated for 25/26. This long-standing wetsuit model is better than ever before. With 100% internal taping and 3/4ths Dry Seam Technology, the durability and warmth of this suit are unmatchable. It might feel slightly stiffer than the Fusion model, but it still offers high-performing flex in the right places.

Another standout feature of the 25/26 model is the additional colorway. The Grey Blue colorway is sleek for lady surfers looking to add a bit of style to their surfing maneuvers. One of the simple, but key features is the sealed cuffs that prevent flushing. Keep an eye on our site for upcoming sales!

Patagonia Women’s Yulex Regulator - $479.00

"Best sustainable wetsuit"

Patagonia Women's R1 Yulex Regulator Chest Zip Wetsuit

Pros
  • One of the most eco-friendly suits
  • Ironclad Guarantee
  • Easier entry and additional flex compared to the old model
  • Comfortable nylon lining
Cons
  • Not as flexible as competitors
  • No exterior fluid seam weld

Our Take:
Patagonia’s big claim to fame is being one of the first reputable companies to release a neoprene-free wetsuit. It was a rough go at times, with fit issues and less-than-ideal comfort. However, Patagonia took the feedback to heart, returned to the drawing board, and re-launched the all-new Yulex Regulator in 2023. They got it right this time, and we’re stoked to chat more about what makes this suit a top choice in the high-end wetsuit category.

First, the updated Regulator now uses recycled nylon fabric instead of polyester, making the suit more flexible. In addition, seams were removed from high-stress areas such as the backside of the suit. This change really improves comfort by leaps and bounds compared to the former iterations. Additionally, Patagonia eliminated the exterior seam weld, allowing for greater freedom of movement from top to bottom. Lastly, the interior liner was updated to a loose-weave knit, creating more warmth and increased flexibility.

What stayed unchanged? Patagonia’s commitment to using sustainable materials and manufacturing processes to create one of the most eco-friendly suits on the market. They also didn’t touch the natural Yulex rubber, which still maintains its FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified status. Don’t pass on the rock-solid Ironclad Guarantee - it’s worth every penny.

Rip Curl Women’s Flashbomb Fusion - $519.95

"Best seam technology wetsuit"

Rip Curl Women's Flashbomb Fusion 3/2 Zip Free Wetsuit

Pros
  • 96% stitch-free seams that don't leak
  • Marketed as "World's fastest drying wetsuit."
  • Ultimate mobility
  • Internal taped seams
Cons
  • Expensive cost comparatively
  • Inventory moves fast
  • The chest zip model doesn't have sealed cuffs

Our Take:
Last up is Rip Curl’s newest release, the Flashbomb Fusion, which features an industry-first: dry seam technology. The Fusion is also the only zipless (sometimes called zip-free) suit featured in this blog. If you are a wetsuit tech geek looking for a high-end minimalist suit, consider the Flashbomb Fusion.

First, what is dry seam technology? We’ve tried it out for ourselves, and it’s legit. Nearly 100% free of any stitching that pierces the neoprene, which weakens with time, the Fusion’s seams use a system of layers that are tapered and glued, along with internal taping for added durability. Seams are typically one of the first things to go on a suit. With the dry seam tech, the Fusion is built to last longer, which balances out the high price tag over time. In addition, if you’re still spry enough to squeeze through the zip-free entry, enjoy the unlimited range of motion without any chest zip material getting in your way or potentially prematurely breaking down.

Let’s not forget about Rip Curl’s E7 neoprene (25% more stretch and 10% lighter than the E6 found in the Dawn Patrol) and the toasty, warm, and comfortable E7 Flash Lining. Combine all these features together, and you get the Fusion: the epitome of stretch, warmth, and comfort.

Women's High-End Wetsuit FAQ

Whether you’re new to surfing or upgrading your gear, choosing the right wetsuit can feel overwhelming. We’ve gathered answers to the most common questions about women’s high-end 3/2 wetsuits to help you make an informed choice and tear up all forms of waves.

What does 3/2mm mean in a wetsuit?

A 3/2mm wetsuit uses 3mm thick neoprene in the torso for warmth and 2mm in the arms and legs for flexibility. It’s a popular thickness for water temperatures between 58°F to 68°F (14°C to 20°C), ideal for spring, summer, and early fall surfing.

Do women’s wetsuits fit differently from men’s?

Yes. Women’s wetsuits are cut to fit female proportions, offering a more accurate fit through the hips, chest, and waist. A well-fitting women’s wetsuit will reduce flushing, improve warmth, and feel more comfortable during movement.

Should I choose a chest zip, a back zip, or a zip-free?

Chest zip wetsuits dominate the mid-range market because they offer a great balance of flexibility, warmth, and easy entry. Back zips are easier to get on and off but tend to let in more water. Zip-free suits are ultra-light and flexible, but can be harder to put on and are usually more expensive.

Are thermal liners worth it in a 3/2mm wetsuit?

Yes—many mid-range suits now include fleece or infrared thermal liners that retain body heat and dry faster between sessions. This makes a 3/2mm suit feel warmer without extra thickness, perfect for cooler mornings or windier conditions.

What are the best brands for women’s mid-range wetsuits?

Top-rated brands include O'Neill, Xcel, Rip Curl, and Manera. Each brand offers unique fits, materials, and features, so it’s worth comparing based on your priorities—whether that’s flexibility, eco-friendliness, or thermal performance.
