Neoprene and Liners

Roxy released the new Swell using a limestone-based Eco StretchFlight neoprene. You’ll find that the StretchFlight is warm, lightweight, and an overall durable neoprene for the price point. The updated Swell does away with the “smoothie skin” paneling featured on the Syncro, which helps shed weight and increase overall flexibility. In my experience, the smoothie skin tends to break down quickly since it’s susceptible to fingernail tears or fin cuts. This new design makes the Swell a more durable option than the former Syncro.

The liner on any cool or cold water suit is essential because it helps maintain heat in the core. 50% of the Eco sleek Warmflight thermal liner is made up of recycled polyester and nylon. The liner covers the front, side, and back panels and uses mineral-enriched fibers to help insulate the wetsuit and hold in heat longer. The pink liner provides more warmth and was also designed to shed water, which helps dry out the suit faster once you are on land and done with your session.

 

Seams and Stitching

The Swell’s seams are glued and blindstitched (sometimes referred to as GBS), with three layers of glue used between the neoprene panels for improved durability. GBS seams are warmer and more durable than a Flat Lock seam that you typically find on entry-level wetsuits because the stitching doesn’t go through both sides of the neoprene. On the inside of the Swell, seams in high-stress areas such as the knees, upper leg, and torso, are all internally taped. This feature helps keep the Swell warmer and adds to the suit's overall durability and lifespan.

Fit and Cut

The Roxy Swell stands out amongst other women’s wetsuit brands because of its fit. Roxy has one of the most feminine cuts to the legs and hip areas: think slim waist with an hourglass figure in the chest and hips. In our experience, we’ve found that Roxy runs on the longer side, which is a great option for taller ladies since it’s made in 8T and 10T (T refers to “Tall”). The Swell series fits a variety of body types with sizes ranging from 2-14 for women weighing between 90-160 lbs.

Entry and Zipper

A PK#8 plastic zipper is found on the chest zip model, whereas a PK#10 plastic zipper is used on the back zip suit. The benefit of a plastic zipper vs. a metal zipper is that it’s more lightweight and doesn’t break down as quickly from the corrosive salt water.

The back zip model utilizes a free-floating zipper. This type of design stops water from seeping through the zipper teeth for a more watertight suit. Many first-time wetsuit shoppers are attracted to the back zip model because of how simple it is to get on and off.

On the flip side, the Swell uses a unique chest zip entry. When unzipped, the panel of neoprene that covers the chest can be pulled back over the head. This style entry has a slightly larger area to pass through when entering and exiting the wetsuit. It is also more forgiving when pulling the hood over your head than suits that use a slant zip entry. Once you’re ready to jump in the surf, simply thread the zipper teeth together, zip shut, and snap close the button for extra reinforcement.

Performance

Although the Swell doesn’t boost a high-end neoprene found on much more expensive options, the Eco Stretchflight used on the Swell holds its own concerning flexibility and comfort while paddling out to the lineup. The Swell packs in everything you need to stay warm, whether you surf in bone-chilling 45-degree F water or sunny Southern Cali breaks.

The 5/4/3 hooded Swell is recommended for water temps ranging from 46-54 F: perfect for surfers here in the PNW. The 4/3 is recommended for water temps ranging from 52-57 F, which is either an ideal PNW summer suit or an Outerbanks winter suit. Lastly, the 3/2 is for surfers paddling out in 55-64 F water temps.

 

Value and Durability

With the plastic zipper that can ward off the salty water, internal taping on high-stress areas and no smoothie skin paneling, this suit is worth the investment. It’ll keep you warm and protected from nature’s elements session after session with proper care and use. One feature that's easy to miss is the key pocket on the left leg below the knee for easy access.
