Product Construction
Volan - Solid Fiberglass
Each Volan fin is hand-cut from premium fiberglass and aligned for optimal weave orientation to deliver superior flex and performance. Made in Santa Barbara, CA, these limited-supply fins feature a heavier, denser Volan cloth that increases speed and projection through turns. Each 44-layer panel is laid up by hand for ideal glass-to-resin balance, ensuring strength, consistent flex, and long-lasting “memory” that returns to center after each turn.

Volan
Each one of our volan fins are perfectly aligned for optimal weave orientation and cut from the highest quality fiberglass in order to produce fins with the very best performance flex characteristics. These limited supply fins will flex more from the body of the fin which will produce increased speed and projection off the bottom and through turns. Each fin is crafted with a labor of love here at our factory in Santa Barbara, CA.
They love using Volan at True Ames for fins because of the intrinsic properties that the cloth provides which pairs well with their stringent production methods. Compared to their standard fiberglass, Volan is a heavier weight glass with a more coarse and dense weave. True Ames painstakingly layup each 44 layer panel by hand (about 2 hours for a 30x30” panel) in order to achieve a high glass to resin ratio, and also to ensure that the coarse weave is properly saturated - these details further add to the strength, and eventually the flex pattern’s ‘memory’, which is essentially the fin’s ability to endure a large number of reps and then ‘return to center’, all while sustaining a powerful flex. All of the True Ames Volan fins are also specifically templated and aligned for optimal weave orientation (about 70* perpendicular to the base) which allow the fins to flex more through the body and ‘trunk’, as opposed to just in the thinner tip area. All in all, they have found that this labor of love results in fins that have the very best flex characteristics that we're able to make.
Ryan Burch History & Origin
Ryan Burch is a surfer-shaper from North County San Diego who became well known for his experimental surfboard designs and highly respected free-surfing career. He grew up surfing from early childhood and by his teen years he was already riding a variety of boards, including wooden alaias, rectangular foam blocks, and experimenting with other non-traditional shapes. After picking up shaping, over time and through the influence of folks like Carl Ekstrom, he developed a signature approach and began on his asymmetrical surfboard journey which has become a staple element in his career. Burch’s board designs span across fishes, shortboards, quads, gliders, and old-school twin-keels, and he is still building them all by hand. Over the years this experimental, DIY ethos as well as his uncanny surfing ability has made him a leading figure in the alternative surfboard realm.
