Product Construction

Thunderbolt Technology
Thunderbolt Technology utilizes advanced materials and technology to decrease weight while enhancing performance, flex characteristics, board control, and durability. Mass-produced epoxy boards are corky and stiff. While light and durable, they simply don’t ride well. But Thunderbolt’s hand-built boards take superior epoxy materials to an entirely different level. These boards provide the feel and sensitivity of a good poly board but deliver performance far beyond traditional epoxy pop-out constructions. Indeed, those who ride these high-tech epoxy boards claim they actually feel better than polyurethane. Thunderbolt boards are 100% hand layups. They begin with an EPS foam core with multi-component carbon fiber stringer systems that produce engineered flex and twist for a more lively, responsive performance. Proprietary designs employing internal carbon fiber components are then arrayed in the deck and bottom of the deck for precise flex control and strength. The core shield PVC provides flexible protection to increase strength and durability without compromising the flex and twist characteristics built into the blank. With ample carbon fiber and fiberglass in the deck, bottom, and rails, these boards both outperform and outlast traditional PU boards and other epoxy designs.

Thunderbolt Red
There are 3 construction types within the Thunderbolt Technology. Thunderbolt Red is handcrafted using an all-around fiberglass lamination. The bottom laminations are 6 and 2-oz. layers while the deck lamination is 6 and 4-ounces. The handcrafted result is a competition weight and flex longboard.

Additional Info

"We called this board the OVA because ova (ovo / ōvum) means eggs in latin and this our interpretation of the traditional egg design that we all fell in love with. The OVA feels so lively on the rail and at the same time— really forgiving. Y'know that soft rail up the front and hard edge through the tail is something that when you come out of those high line— it feels so confident to put it on rail and push all the way through my turn. All the way through the bottom of the wave. The fitting of acceleration on rail is probably the most exceptional for me. Y'know.. acceleration three times! Having that setup gives so much confidence dropping in.. in to steep waves especially. And speed. The difference in speed in the tube on a quad is known throughout any board design and it's definitely no different on this. I really love the feel of 2 + 1 in the fatter, slower waves. Get a lot more pivot and sort of feels much more like I would be surfing my performance longboards and such. So, I have been designing and shaping surfboards for the past 14 years and I've spent the last 3 years making probably 10 different versions of the OVA. I'm finally at the point with the OVA to share it with the world with Thunderbolt Technology." —Ben Skinner
