We have evaluated various factors, including quality, fit, thermal properties, and customer reviews, to ensure that each wetsuit on our list delivers exceptional performance and value for your investment.

A 3/2 wetsuit is recommended for water temperatures ranging from 60 to 65 degrees F, perfect for a central California summer or a brisk New England spring. We consider a mid-range 3/2 to fall within a price range of $350-$430, with more quality features over an affordable option without pushing a $450+ price tag. Industry Insights and Updates

We continually update our reviews to keep the content relevant as the wetsuit industry continues to evolve.

  • The majority of wetsuit manufacturers now use more sustainable practices in the production process—dope-dyed yarns, water-based glues on seams, and fully or partially recycled materials in the liner, exterior fabric, and rubber.

  • Cleanline Surf now stocks Xcel wetsuits! This opens up our inventory to more options for all surfers.

  • For Fall 2025, Rip Curl nearly revamped its entire wetsuit lineup, transitioning from neoprene to natural rubber. This shift delivers a significantly more environmentally friendly construction while maintaining the same high level of quality.

O’Neill Hyperfreak - $399.95

“Maximum Freedom of Mobility”

O'Neill-Hyperfreak-3/2+-Chest-Zip-Wetsuit

Pros
  • Performance fit
  • Maximum flexibility
  • Super lightweight
  • Comfortable neoprene
Cons
  • Not the most durable
  • Not as warm as other options
  • Slim fit

Our Take: The Hyperfreak 3/2+ is an outstanding option for any surfer wanting to perform at their highest level. O’Neill’s famous Technobutter 3 neoprene is used throughout the body and legs of the wetsuit, while Technobutter 3X is used in the arms and shoulders for even greater mobility. Since being introduced to the wetsuit industry, the Hyperfreak has been a top seller.

My favorite feature of the Hyperfreak is the F.U.Z.E. closure system. It makes entry and exit of the wetsuit swift by having the zipper pre-attached. The F.U.Z.E closure system also includes drain holes in critical locations to prevent the wetsuit from filling up with water. I wouldn’t say the Hyperfreak is as durable as the high-end Psycho Tech; however, it still includes a minimal seam design that prevents tearing.

Rip Curl E-Bomb - $349.95

“Conservation of Energy through Flexibility"

Rip-Curl-E-Bomb-3/2-Chest-Zip-Wetsuit

Pros
  • Warm E7 lining
  • Sealed cuffs
  • Lightweight
  • Flexible natural rubber
Cons
  • Non-zip entry and exit takes time to get used to
  • Not as durable as high-end suits

Our Take:
Arguably, the Hyperfreak’s main competition, the Rip Curl E-Bomb, is up there on the flexible scorecard. The E-Bomb excels in comfort as well. That, paired with the flexibility, will have you extending your sessions with very little paddle fatigue. If a high-performing wetsuit is what you need, then look no further. Based on price, popularity, and quality, featuring the Rip Curl E-Bomb is a no-brainer. Consider your height if you’re trying to decide between the O’Neill Hyperfreak and the Rip Curl E-Bomb 3/2. Rip Curl suits are generally lengthier and can fit longer body types.

The technical features of the E-Bomb include Natural rubber, sealed/taped seams, and an easy chest entry zipper. The plant based natural foam rubbr feels incredibly lightweight, and the E7 thermo lining offers 20% more stretch than the E6. With 100% Ultimate tape, the E-Bomb is exceptionmally water tight and durable Lastly, with sealed cuffs and a hydro-loc smooth skin collar, flushing is almost non-existent.

O’Neill Heat - $429.95

“Go-to choice for bigger surfers"

O'Neill Heat 3/2 Men's Wetsuit

Pros
  • Durable fluid seam weld
  • Windproof, smooth skin panels
  • Stretchy neoprene
  • Comfortable TB3
  • Offered in 4XL
Cons
  • Not as stretchy as other mid-range suits
  • Higher price tag

Our Take:
Another wetsuit worthy of featuring is the O’Neill Heat 3/2. The Heat stands out in terms of durability and warmth. It’s also one of the best options for bigger surfers: offered in sizes up to 4XL. Larger sizes are not often found in high-performance suits, and plus-sized surfers are lucky that O’Neill has kept the Heat in production over the years.

The O'Neill Heat is well worth the price. It features TechnoButter 3 neoprene, sealed seams, internal taping, and a warm Firewall interior liner. With its outer glued seams and strategically placed seams, the O’Neill Heat is one of the best options on this list for durability. Considering it’s the only back zip option on this list, the Heat is a high contender as an inclusive and versatile suit option.

Xcel Comp X - $429.95

“Sustainability Work Horse"

Xcel Comp X 3/2 Men's Wetsuit

Pros
  • Durable seams
  • Broader fit
  • Wrist and ankle seals
  • Maximum comfort & flexibility
Cons
  • Higher price tag
  • Could be too warm at times

Our Take:
The Xcel Comp X is slightly more expensive than competitors, but it's worth every penny. The Channel Flex exterior technology, Thermo Dry Celiant, and Thermo Dry Infared are a few features that make this wetsuit stand out. Superior warmth and stretch are what made this suit land on the best 3/2 wetsuit roundup.

With an easy-entry system and Fusion X tape, durability is an afterthought. It is hard to come by suits that check multiple boxes, and the Xcel Comp X has many features that make it one of the best, well-rounded suits on the market.

Best Mid-Range 3/2 Wetsuits - FAQs

What water temperatures are 3/2 wetsuits best for?

A 3/2 wetsuit is ideal for water temperatures between 60°F and 68°F (15°C and 20°C), making it a solid choice for spring, summer, and early fall in many regions. San Diego is a good place to use a 3/2.

What features should I look for in a mid-range wetsuit?

The biggest performance differences in mid-range suits come from construction quality. Look for:

  • Flexibility: Stretch panels improve paddling and reduce fatigue
  • Seam construction: Glued and blind-stitched seams reduce water entry
  • Thermal lining: Adds warmth without increasing thickness
  • Fit: A snug fit prevents flushing
  • Entry system: Chest zips usually seal better than back zips. Back zips are easier to get into.

Flexibility and warmth are the two most important performance factors when choosing a wetsuit.

Are chest-zip wetsuits better than back-zip wetsuits for 3/2s?

Chest zips typically offer better water resistance and flexibility, but some surfers prefer the easier entry of a back zip. At the affordable level, both can perform well—choose based on your personal comfort and needs.

How long should a budget 3/2 wetsuit last?

With proper care (rinsing after use, drying out of direct sun, and storing correctly), a good, affordable 3/2 can last 2–4 seasons, depending on how often you surf.

How tight should a 3/2 wetsuit fit?

A wetsuit should feel snug but not restrictive. You should be able to breathe comfortably and raise your arms overhead, but there shouldn’t be loose areas where water can pool. A proper fit helps trap a thin layer of water that your body warms for insulation.

Can beginners use a mid-range wetsuit?

Absolutely. Mid-range wetsuits are often the best value for beginners because they provide noticeable comfort and warmth upgrades that make longer sessions easier without the high price of premium suits.

How do I make my wetsuit last longer?

Follow these wetsuit care tips:

  • Rinse with fresh water after every session
  • Dry inside-out in the shade
  • Avoid hanging from the shoulders (fold at the waist instead)
  • Keep it out of hot cars and direct sunlight
