Cleanline Staff Sammy Says:
"The True Ames Greenough Volan High Speed is an excellent single fin to use on a longboard designed for speed and spring. I have a 9.25” in my 8’8” Wilderness George Greenough Edge Board. With the lack of surface area in the fin, I’m able to project the board through turns and surf rail to rail easily while counteracting the bit of hold I get when the board planes on the narrower surface of the board. This fin works best in specifically designed boards versus a standard log or mid-size board unless you’re looking for a loose feel with little hold."

Product Construction
Volan Fiberglass
Handcrafted in Santa Barbara, CA, from strong Volan fiberglass with a thick, high-strength weave. Each fin is hand-laid, precision foiled, and fine-tuned for balanced flex that comes from the body, not the tip. This design enhances speed, drive, and projection through turns for optimal performance.
Additional Info
The Greenough High Speed excels as its name implies–at high speeds. It is perhaps one of the truest examples of George Greenough’s revolutionary high-aspect ratio fin designs; similar to the wings of an airplane, its slender design will harness heaps of power and produce lift while maintaining very low drag. Longer, point break style waves make a prime venue to realize this fin’s full potential.
- High-aspect ratio, slender design will produce power and lift with minimal drag
- Pairs well with many types of boards, from mid-lengths to gliders and everything in between
- Volan fiberglass construction generates high-performance flex
Greenough is the man behind a continual evolution of wave-riding innovations that are widely attributed for paving the way from traditional longboarding to high-performance surfing in the pocket. He originally designed the High Speed to accompany his “Edge” boards, which have been described by renowned shaper Marc Andreini as “two surfboards in one: a narrow concave tow board with hard edges, nose to tail, is shaped underneath a displacement hull with full lifted rails.” Like Greenough’s Edge boards, his High Speed fin works in all conditions, and prevails well in powerful surf. No matter Greenough’s original intentions for this fin, it has evolved and been proven by many to work wonderfully in a wide variety of board types–from mid-lengths to gliders, and everything in between.
Volan
True Ames makes this fin in Volan only because its high-aspect ratio design requires it to be made with the strongest and thickest weave possible. Don’t get them wrong–with relatively little surface area, the fin is going to flex. But the structural integrity of the Volan will generate power and drive, and ultimately allow for optimal performance. The True Ames Volan fins are fine-tuned with precision foils as well as proper flex. Crafted with a labor of love at our factory in Santa Barbara, CA, these fins undergo the strictest quality control. Their Volan panels are meticulously hand-laid and templated ensuring optimal weave orientation and superior strength, with flex coming more from the body rather than just the tip. This enhances speed and projection off the bottom and through turns, making our Volan fins a pinnacle of the highest performance flex characteristics.
