Product Info

The Taylor Jensen Series The Gem Helium Timbertek Surfboard proves that alternative thinking leads to wonderful developments. The Gem is a collaboration between Dan Mann and 2X World Longboard Champion Taylor Jensen.

Earlier this year Taylor asked Dan to consider a ‘one board in the trunk’ option for long boarders who want both trim and turns; he was essentially asking Dan for a design that would land somewhere between his TJ Pro and his TJ Everyday.

Dan’s response was an intriguing intersection of shortboard style concaves with a longboard style outline and the same fin placements that Taylor likes in all his boards.

He and Taylor decided to call this model The Gem because of how valuable it is - a one board quiver for 9 foot plus board riders that can trim on the nose as easily as it can carve on rail. The diamond tail isn’t a coincidence. It’s a Gem.

A beautiful and responsive longboard, and fun for any experience level. The Gem can hold its own in little ankle biters to just overhead waves. It's super fun, incredibly versatile, and the Timbertek isn't just pretty-- it's durable, too. If you're looking for a longboard with some performance, the Gem is true to its namesake.

Helium Core Technology

Firewire Product Construction Helium Core Technology

This is your ideal technology choice for generating speed in weak, everyday waves. The Firewire Helium technology is a stringerless 1.0 lb EPS foam core with flex controlled with rails made from Paulownia and Balsa wood, running the complete length from nose to tail, combined with a 3mm proprietary aerospace composite deck skin.

The wood rails enable a lively flex in the rail that gives a loaded-up, spring-back feeling, and the deck skins make your board feel this way for a long time.

Helium deck skins are beneficial for both durability and performance - and have a memory that will rebound back to form after being compressed, making it very responsive in addition to keeping your deck surface pristine for many years.

Helium Performance
Ideal for generating speed in weak, everyday waves - this is your choice if you want unmatched response, lightweight and durability. Helium has a lively, responsive flex underfoot, and surfs quickly and explosively when creating tight angles.

Helium Construction
The Firewire Helium technology is a stringerless 1.0 lb EPS foam core with flex controlled with rails made from Paulownia and Balsa wood, running the complete length from nose to tail, combined with a 3mm proprietary aerospace composite deck skin.

Helium Lamination Compatibility
Helium cores are paired with fiberglass lamination, Volcanic lamination, Timbertek lamination, or Artificial Wave Technology fiberglass lamination.

Timbertek Lamination Technology

Firewire Product Construction Timbertek Lamination Technology

Made from one of the fastest-growing trees in the world, Paulownia, Timbertek technology is one of the lowest CO2-emitting constructions available - making it your most sustainable surfboard constructions in production today. This species of tree grows up to twenty feet in a single year, and has the nickname, 'The Phoneix Tree,' because when they're cut down, they regenerate incredibly quickly from existing root systems. It's also incredibly durable and nearly impossible to dent, extending the life of your board.

Timbertek Performance
Firewire's most sustainable construction with quick response. This lamination technology is incredibly durable, and surfs powerfully and steadily. It feels solid and carries momentum down the line.

Timbertek Construction
The Firewire Timbertek lamination schedule is a 3mm Paulownia wood deck skin that wraps a Helium core, capped with a single 4 oz layer of fiberglass cloth on the deck and bottom.

Timbertek Core Capability
Timbertek lamination is paired with a Helium core with one minor difference. Rather than a 3mm aerospace composite deck skin, it's core has a 3mm veneer paulownia wood deck skin.

Responsive Nose Rider

Got an 8'8 for 155 lbs. Been riding mine with 7.5" Greenough fin and medium side bites for about one year. Super great board!

In response to Skitter, the Gem is a performance NOSE RIDER, not a High performance long board, so off course, it won't be as fast & racy as a Flex Flight!
What the Gem offers is faster response than the typically wider/thicker nose riders. It's not supposed to be a 2.0 Flex Flight one can nose ride.
It would be more fair/relevant to compare the Gem experience against another nose rider ;)

Average at best

Surfed it with Multiple finset ups and waves ranging from 2 foot to overhead. This board does is average at best! Slow on takeoff and slow on the wave, Doesn’t turn as great as they make it sound! Personally, I think the concave in the tail should be kept for shotboards, as it is limiting the potential of this board! If you want the best firewire longboard for overall performance, excluding noseriding, buy the 9’6” flex flight squash tail- comfortably the best performing board in ALL conditions!!

Real Gem

Loving it!

I'm 5'8 -145 lbs, got the 8'3 Gem with 7" greenough 4A and small rear side bites FCS2

Paddling is ok, not as good as expected but I still catch more than with my previous fun board

Everything else about the Gem has been great: stable, very responsive, much easier to ride than expected.. and so easy to walk on and nose ride!

From small mushy to 4 feet waves (NW Pacific/early intermediate), works like a charm, catches more and goes farther than any of my previous boards..
..and on better days, super maneuverable, turns easily, trims really nice, feels really smooth... stoked

I would recommend it to anyone including beginners
