Industry Insights and Updates
- Billabong revamped nearly its entire model line with a major update: going from a traditional neoprene rubber to a 100% neoprene-free rubber back in Fall 2024.
- Cleanline Surf now proudly carries Xcel, which has been producing quality suits, boots, and gloves for decades.
-
The parent company of Billabong and Quiksilver wetsuits filed for bankruptcy earlier this year. Because of that, we expect a limited inventory of all Billabong and Quik wetsuits in the near future.
O’Neill Epic - $219.95+

- Best entry-level wetsuit
- Wind blocking smooth skin panels
- True to size fit
- Easy back zip entry
- Smooth skin panels can tear easily
- Not internally taped
Our Take: The Epic is a robust entry-level suit with many high-end O'Neill features. Featuring 100% Ultraflex Neoprene, which is both lightweight and durable. Another great characteristic is the double seal neck closure, which is comfortable and helps prevent any unwanted water from entering the suit.
The Epic comes equipped with O'Neill's lumbar seamless design (large paneling) and a re-engineered covert blackout zip to ensure maximum ease of entry and flexibility. Lastly, the chest and back of the suit are covered in a smooth skin paneling. The paneling acts as a wind blocker and keeps the suit warm by trapping the heat from the sun.
The Epic has been a shop staple for years when it comes to surfing cold water and has successfully stood the test of time. We see everyone from first-time buyers to seasoned veterans who are looking for a backup suit, reaching for the Epic based on its proven dependability. There is an Epic for nearly every body size! In general, O’Neill runs true to size with a broad-shouldered fit. If you are looking for a warm, affordable wetsuit from a dependable company, this is your suit.

Xcel Comp - $279.95+
“Softest Liner”

- Great flexibility
- Comfortable fit
- Fits true to size
- Pre-fed chest zipper
- Lining threads can catch easily
- Not made in a 5/4
Our Take:Xcel is a new brand to Cleanline Surf, and with it, it brings a longstanding reputation for producing quality cold water surf gear for years.
The Comp is a level above Xcel's budget-friendly Axis wetsuit. The extra cash gets you an upgraded internal liner, which makes the suit warmer and much more comfortable. A combination of Nanoprene Lite Japanese Limestone and Thermo Dry Infrared (the same liner found in Xcel's high-end models) makes this suit the most stretchy and lightest in the Xcel lineup.
Other quality features like triple-glued and blind-stitched seams are reinforced on the inside with Fusion X tape, adding warmth and durability, all with a price tag under $300. We've found that Xcel fits similarly to O'Neill and is true to size. In fact, the Comp is available in sizes from XS to XXXL, making it an easy choice for surfers of all ages and sizes.

- Cleanline exclusive 5/4 back zip model
- Limited inventory at the moment
- Chest zipper isn't pre-fed
Our Take: Billabong makes an excellent entry-level series of suits called the Absolute Natural Upcycler that gives surfers a flexible, warm wetsuit at a price almost everyone can afford. The suit features Billabong's proprietary Natural Rubber blend, a stretchy, comfortable, and environmentally friendly material. There's a Graphene liner on the inside of these suits as well. This is the same liner you'll find on Billabong's most expensive suits and provides excellent heat retention. On the Absolute Natural Upcycler, you'll find the liner in the core and legs.
Overall, you can't go wrong with any of these options, and the hooded version of the Absolute Natural Upcycler has been a shop favorite here since its release. We like the Absolute so much that Billabong made a Cleanline exclusive 5/4 non-hooded back zip model. This particular model is our go-to rental wetsuit for customers surfing in the cold waters of Northern Oregon. This cold water is available in various sizes, entry systems, and thicknesses. Rip Curl Dawn Patrol - $259.95+
“Best value suit”

- Warm and quick-drying liner
- Available in chest and back zip entries
- Internally taped seams
- Shop stable
- Smooth skin panel care tear easily
- Runs small
Our Take: Rip Curl’s Dawn Patrol has consistently been one of our top-selling wetsuits. You can grab most of the different versions of this highly reviewed Dawn Patrol for under $300; only the 5/4 hooded model tops out at $319.95. Rip Curl has consistently improved the model line, and the latest edition features high-end components at an affordable price tag. The suit comes standard with the 5th generation of Elastomax Superstretch Neoprene (E5). Apart from being more flexible, this material is also 20% lighter and 10% warmer than previous models.
One of the defining features of the Dawn Patrol is the super warm fleece lining they have been using for years, called the “flash-lining,” which runs from the torso down through to the legs, providing warmth and comfort while minimizing dry time. The Dawn Patrol back zip model has a system to prevent water from entering the zipper and flushing through the suit. The suit features internally taped seams in high-stress areas—this type of seam construction results in a better water seal and overall durability.
We recommend sizing up if you're in between sizes since Rip Curl tends to run small. The Dawn Patrol model line comes in rubber with 3/2 back zips and 5/4 hooded cold-water options, perfect if you’re surfing in water temperatures ranging from 45°F to the high 60s°F.

Affordable Wetsuits FAQ
If you’re shopping for a wetsuit on a budget, you're not alone. With so many great options available under $350, it’s possible to get high performance without a high price tag. Below are some of the most frequently asked questions to help guide your decision:
Are affordable wetsuits warm enough?
Yes! Most wetsuits under $350 are perfectly warm for mild to moderate water temperatures. Look for features like:
-
Glued and Blind Stitched (GBS) seams for water resistance
-
Thermal linings for added insulation
-
Proper thickness for your region (e.g., 3/2mm for summer, 4/3mm for spring/fall, 5/4/3mm for winter)
Do budget wetsuits offer enough flexibility?
They’ve come a long way. Many mid-range wetsuits now use flexible limestone-based or recycled neoprene that rivals higher-end models. While ultra-premium suits may feel a bit stretchier, options like the Manera Seafarer or Xcel Comp still provide excellent freedom of movement for surfing, paddling, and diving.
What kind of seams should I look for?
Seam construction affects both warmth and durability:
-
Glued and Blind Stitched (GBS) – Sealed against water; ideal for colder conditions
-
Taped seams – Extra durability and warmth; a bonus if included in a sub-$350 suit
Will an affordable wetsuit last?
Many affordable wetsuits hold up just fine. Look for Reinforced knees, Internal seam taping, and a Brand reputation for quality materials. For heavy use, consider investing in a suit with higher-end construction or being ready for a replacement every 1–2 seasons.
Are there eco-friendly wetsuits under $350?
Yes—and that’s good news for your wallet and the planet. A few standout options include:
-
Billabong Absolute Natural Upcycler – Uses natural rubber and recycled linings
-
Quiksilver Everyday Sessions – Made from limestone neoprene and water-based glue
-
Manera Seafarer – Features recycled neoprene, carbon black, and jersey
How do I get the right fit?
Fit is critical. Wetsuits should feel snug (but not suffocating) when dry and will loosen slightly in the water. Always consult the brand’s size chart, and don’t assume sizes are the same across different brands. Sizing up for broader shoulders or chest may help if you're between sizes.
Chest zip or back zip—what’s better on a budget?
Both have pros and cons:
-
Chest zips – Warmer, more watertight, better for performance
-
Back zips – Easier to get into, ideal for beginners
Many budget wetsuits offer both options, so it comes down to personal preference.
