When Matt Calvani set out to design the California Square, his goal was to make a faster noserider that could surf any type of wave on any coast. Calvani felt on certain waves he was getting caught behind on sections especially on mushy, crumbly waves. So in conceptualizing the Cali Square, the idea was to go back to design basics. With an 18 1/2" nose and 17" tail, he achieved a more parallel outline. Then he offset the wide tail with a thinner rail with more belly in the tail to keep it loose in turns. At first, Calvani went very flat with the rocker but found he wasn’t getting enough lift in the pocket when noseridering, so instead, he kept adding tail rocker while keeping the nose rocker flat until he achieved a good balance between speed and lift.

"I maintained a medium depth blended concave. The only trade-off with the design is that because the board does run faster than my other models, it forces you to burn speed and stall properly to get good long noserides. I feel it's an exciting and challenging board that ultimately results in longer overall rides." — Matt Calvani

ⓘ SURFBOARD REPAIRED DAMAGE
This board has some cosmetic scuffs and had some very minor damage on the tip of the tail. This has been repaired. See photos for further detail.

Product Construction

Polyurethane/Polyester Resin
Building a board in PU means using a Polyurethane foam blank and glassing it with polyester (PE) resin . This is how the majority of today’s surfboards are built. It is not a new way to make a board, but the materials are very stable, strong, consistent, and easy to work with. Many surfers prefer the feel of PU boards because that is what they have ridden all their lives, and because they feel really good.
