Brian Says:

I picked up a 5'6" Nano to transition from my 5'6" Meyerhoffer Horsepill. It has the volume to get into waves a bit earlier, while having a much more aggressive shape and maintaining the short footprint that I prefer. It is extremely impressive how fast this board is, as it is my first foray into the Modern Planing Hull. While it takes off quick, it also has great rail response, which is what I was looking for. I've had it out in chest to overhead surf and even though it is short in length, it holds up in bigger surf surprisingly well. It has become my one short board go-to. Quick, responsive, good times-

Daniel Thomson (Tomo) is a young surfboard designer from Australia who is at the forefront of modern surfboard design and construction. He has developed and refined the MPH (Modern Planing Hull) to almost its full potential, resulting in a board that both looks and rides incredibly.

Dan explains, “For me, it’s all about top end speed. The more speed I can generate; the more radical my performance potential becomes. The TOMO MPH is like an extension of a surfer’s body. A mind surfing experience, just pick your lines and the board does the rest. It’s almost as if you can forget about the board beneath your feet altogether and just interact with the energy in the wave”.

The original MPH (Modern Planing Hull). The NANO is the stock MPH and a true example of a 21st century modern thruster. It is a user friendly all around board but a radical performer with free flowing speed and a very natural controlled ride. Effortlessly fast and loose, yet predictable and drivey, the NANO ticks all the boxes. The rider really feels as though they can pull off any maneuver and it rides with a very pure sensation of flow.

The NANO features a clean, foiled shape, a wide point forward of center, a round nose for smooth turns and a wide chopped tail with soft corners for exceptional speed and glide. The straight rail line through the back end of the board will provide the necessary control through turns. The Nano has a surprising range with good edge control in bigger punchy waves.

Ride this one in the middle to the performance end of your preferred volume range in thigh to slightly overhead surf. Ideal for intermediate to advanced surfers.

Linear Flex Technology

Firewire’s product development is focused on three things: exclusively using epoxy resin and EPS foam cores, achieving lighter and stronger surfboards through sandwich construction, and optimizing flex to enhance performance. Though LINEAR FLEX TECHNOLOGY (LFT) may appear to be a simple construction employing familiar design philosophies found in traditionally built surfboards, nothing could be further from the truth.

LFT incorporates Firewire’s new SPRINGER HD, a 0.75” (18 mm) wide aerospace composite that runs down the centerline of the board, representing the next generation in our SPRINGER technology. Unlike the original balsa SPRINGER build which only added stiffness under the front foot, the SPRINGER HD runs the entire length of the board and plays a pivotal role in optimizing flex from nose to tail.

Inserting a high-density material down the center of the board does create engineering hurdles. For example, deck compression over the SPRINGER HD would be less than the surrounding EPS core. Over time, the deck would develop a raised area adjacent to the SPRINGER HD, akin to the ‘ridging' effect on a PU surfboard as the surrounding foam collapses on either side of the stringer.

We addressed this issue in two ways. Firstly, the SPRINGER HD stops approximately 10mm below the top deck, ensuring that the surrounding EPS compression will not lead to ‘ridging’. Utilizing our proven sandwich construction methodology, we also added an extremely durable material to the top deck of the board. This ‘deck-skin’ now serves as an additional buffer against the ridging effect while simultaneously working in tandem with the SPRINGER HD to optimize the overall flex pattern of the LFT build. The end result is a durable surfboard with lively flex patterns that will maintain its hi-performance characteristics over time.

Firewire Surfboards - Nano LFT This thing Flies! Review by Finaddict Finaddict
This board is one of the most fun, fastest boards I have ridden period. It has a lot of compact volume, and the drive and hold in bigger surf surprised me. It is a one board quiver for the guy who doesn't want to carry three boards with him every time he surfs. The durability is great as well, although I feel like the LFT is a bit more fragile than my Timber Tek and Rapid Fire boards. I highly recommend this thing!

Thing buckled within my first ten waves, dont buy LFT technology, these are pretty much throwaway boards for the uber-rich or sponsored surfers

The cleanline guys were super helpful helping order in the right size board and put together the perfect setup, with tons of fin and traction options... and this thing a a beast! so fast down the line and responsive, tomo shapes for the win.. got the 5'8 LFT and it has plenty volume (im 6'0 155lbs) for me to catch everything oregon has thrown at me, was concerned dropping from my usual 7footer, but the volume is working great and the performance is a whole new world for me, so goddamn fun. highly reccomended
