Another wonder from the mind of Dan Mann, the Firewire Chum Lee Helium Surfboard tucks lots of volume into a very rippable template. The Chum Lee fills the gap between groveler and shortboard while adding a super fun travel board to your quiver. A descendant of the popular Potato models from recent years, the Chum Lee shaves off some of the extra fat and injects a faster and looser feeling into your ride.

The Chum Lee offers smooth paddling, clean drops and quick carves all in less than perfect conditions making it the ultimate semi groveler shape. The Chum Lee should be ridden a bit longer so ride your Chum Lee 2”- 3” longer than a Baked Potato or Sweet Potato style board. The added rocker and round tail combined with less width make it super versatile and allow for a seamless transition back to a performance shortboard when the waves are going off. With a thin tail profile and strategic concave the Chum Lee allows for playful precision in day to day surf.

  • TAIL: Round

Helium Technology
Firewire's Helium construction is a breakthrough in extremely lightweight and durable performance epoxy technology. By pairing existing features from the highly successful FST (Future Shapes Technology) build process with an alternative sandwich skin material, Firewire has created Helium construction which uses this new composite in conjunction with a redesigned parabolic wood rail that includes both Balsa and Paulownia woods. The end result is that Helium has a +15% weight reduction over FST, a slightly faster flex and rebound characteristic, as well as a higher breakpoint. Lighter, stronger and more responsive... Helium is the future under your feet.

Firewire Surfboards Chum Lee Helium Surfboard Greatest Small Wave boardReview by Ben Ben
The most versatile small wave board i've ever owned. Fast paddler, it catches waves effortlessly, and the rails let you really work the board and turn it much easier and sharper than the outline suggest. Up to shoulder high this board rocks. I took it out last week a couple days in 2ft waves and it caught every wave I was after. I never thought i'd have so much fun in such small waves. I'm 5'10 175ish and the 5'9 is perfect. I might have gotten away with the 5'7, but I'm glad i opted for the extra rail length and volume for these small summer days.

Firewire Surfboards Chum Lee Helium Surfboard Light, fast, funReview by Todd Todd
My first session with this board in 2-4 foot, high tide, slightly mushy waves in Bolsa Chica in southern California. Most of the boards around me were longboards, and I was on my Chum Lee with quad fins. I had no trouble catching waves, my friend was surprised at how easily I could catch waves with this setup. Each wave I paddled for and took off on, it felt almost like someone was giving me a gentle push and the board really is incredibly fast.

The board has a surreal lightness to it when you pick it up.

It was quite easy to paddle around in, and I could comfortably duck dive under the outside rogues that were coming in with it.

I'm 5'9" tall and about 175 pounds and I was very satisfied with the 5'9" length version. I'm going to get a lot of fun out of this board.

With the speed and lightness to this board, I can sense this might really challenge the balance of newer surfers, especially on the few pitchier waves during the session, but an experienced surfer should be OK, or could just throw in the fins in thruster position.

Solid 5 stars for the board, and thank you Stefan of Cleanline for helping me get this board promptly after I was trying to get a Sweet Potato that Firewire seems to possibly have discontinued (of which this board is the spiritual successor to it seems).
