The Firewire Hydronaut LFT Surfboard is Tomo’s first step-up dedicated to powerful waves. We’re stoked for the release of this shape after years of refinement by Tomo because this model has earned a cult-like following over the past several years since Tomo first made it public. The shape has an elliptical template with a wide point forward of center and a tight radius ‘torpedo’ round nose profile. This ‘torpedo’ nose represents Tomo’s big wave approach to maneuverability, in the same way his ‘cut off’ nose in the Omni and Cymatic represent his approach to maneuverability in smaller waves. In Tomo’s words, the ‘torpedo’ nose gives the surfer a “safer feeling in critical situations because of the way it enhances the quickness of direction changes when maneuvers are made at high speed”. Tomo has surfed this board everywhere from Black’s to Baja Malibu to Hawaii, and all over Australia. And so has Stuey Kennedy. Together these two have brought Tomo’s big wave philosophies to the masses for the first time with the Hydronaut, and we’re anticipating an elevated level of performance surfing on big waves in 2018. We’re also excited for average surfers to find that this shape can do the simple stuff easily: Drop in. Pull in. Spit out. Kick out.

  • TAIL: Round

  • FIN CONFIGURATION: Tri-Quad. Fins Not Included

  • FINS: Futures or FCSII

  • CONSTRUCTION: Linear Flex Technology

  • SURFBOARD TYPE: Shortboard

Linear Flex Technology
LFT construction incorporates a white deckskin into their proven sandwich EPS construction methodology as well as the Springer HD, a 0.75” (18 mm) wide aerospace composite that runs down the center-line of the board, representing the next generation in Firewire's Springer technology. Though Linear Flex Technology may appear to be a simple construction employing familiar design philosophies found in traditionally built surfboards, nothing could be further from the truth. The Springer HD runs the entire length of the board and plays a pivotal role in optimizing flex from nose to tail. The end result is a durable surfboard with lively flex patterns that will maintain its hi-performance characteristics over time.

Firewire Hydronaut LFT Surfboard Awesome shapeReview by Daniel Daniel
Got this board to surf hollow reefbreaks, after surfing it for a week in 3-8 ft waves I can say the shape feels great. Feels reliable even in late/critical drops, and still works on smaller punchy waves.
I weigh around 80kg and I got a 6'0 30.3 lt. the board paddles very well for its volume and I had no trouble getting into double overhead waves.

Only downside is this lft, feels softer than my other lft boards even though it's slightly heavier, the deck shows no depressions but bottom is dimpled from duckdiving already.
Would be nice to have in Helium.

Firewire Hydronaut LFT Surfboard Awesome Board!Review by Marcus Marcus
Just did a few months in Costa Rica surfing some solid waves so had a chance to try out my new Hydronaut. All I can say is this board went amazing! I snagged it to sit above my Omni as a mini stepup since the beach break I was at can have punch/size. I found that it paddled well and got me in early. The thing that surprised me the most was how well it turned. Had some cutbacks/turns that were really memorable. It felt very stable pushing it on big days and user friendly. Also very fast board. Compliments the Omni well. One thing tho is it does like size/a steep wave so if you are riding too far out in the flats or if its softer it wont be ideal, atleast from my experience.(lots of rocker on the board)

I'm 70kg at 5'9 and snagged the 6'0 at 30.3L with a 5'5 27.7L Omni as my daily driver.
The guys at Cleanline recommended either the 5'11 or 6'0 depending on what I was looking to get out of it. I ended up going for the 6'0 just because there are occasions I'll be tossing on 6mm as well wanted as much paddle power when there's a lot of water moving around and to get in soon those during those times, tho I think the 5'11 would have went great as well too. Couldn't be happier with the board and excited to have it in the bag for some upcoming trips. Thanks Joe and Stefan for all the help getting me sorted with the board!
