"The driving force behind Channel Islands Surfboards is the demand on design created by the world’s greatest surfers, allowing for the highest performance surfing possible. To provide the most dedicated surfers with the most advanced, performance designs is my passion" - Al Merrick, Designer/Shaper

In 1999, Al Merrick designed the Flyer, revolutionizing high-performance surfing in small waves. Channel Islands has modernized the Flyer into a shorter and wider package. This new plan-shape allows for the same volume in a shorter rail line. We kept the forgiving 2-stage rocker and added spiral vee starting in front of the fins to allow for rail-to-rail quickness. The signature Merrick hip provides a pivot point for tight arcs.

This Channel Islands New Flyer 5'10 Surfboard has a unidirectional carbon strip. The carbon stiffens the middle of the board, increasing flex and bend in the tail and thereby a tighter turn radius. The carbon also reinforces the middle portion of the board against breakage with no detectable weight. Ride The New Flyer 2"-4" shorter than your height.

Construction

Polyurethane/Polyester Resin
Polyurethane is the traditional way of hand making surfboards. This technique was introduced in the '50s and came after wooden surfboards. It starts with a polyurethane foam blank which is then glassed over with a fiberglass cloth. Polyester Resin is then applied by working on several layers before the board is finally sanded down to its final state. The result is a nice clean, smooth, hand shaped surfboard. What's also nice about this construction is that the PU foam is a closed cell so that it won't easily soak in water if you happen to encounter a ding. Plus, the technique has been perfected over the years and surfers know it so it feels familiar under their feet.
