Industry Insights and Updates
We continually update our reviews to keep the content relevant as the wetsuit industry continues to evolve.
-
Billabong Bankruptcy: Billabong's parent company filed for bankruptcy earlier this year. Because of that, we expect a limited inventory of all Billabong wetsuits in the near future.
-
Cleanline Surf now stocks Xcel wetsuits! This opens up our inventory to more options for all surfers.
-
Wetsuits are better than ever before, and surfing cold waters is completely doable for any skill level of surfer.
Rip Curl Flashbomb Fusion 4/3 - $539.95+
"Seams that Don’t Leak"

- Warm & fast drying
- Durable E7 Flash Lining
- Sealed cuffs to prevent flushing
- Comfortable liner
- Takes time to break in and can seem a little stiff at first
Our Take: The first on our list of the best 4/3 high-end wetsuits is the Rip Curl Flashbomb Fusion. With the renowned reputation of Rip Curl, the Flashbomb Fusion is well worth the price. With comfortable E7 flash lining, the suit is exceptionally warm and one of the fastest-drying wetsuits on the market. In addition, the E7 neoprene is Rip Curl's most advanced neoprene to date.
What truly makes the Fusion stand out is the Dry Seam Technology, which makes it so the seams don’t leak. I have this wetsuit in the 5/4 version, and it has treated me well. It took time to break in, but now it is one of my all-time favorite suits. If you’re looking for a warm suit with complete internal taping that doesn’t lack comfort or flexibility, look no further. Lastly, we’ve found that Rip Curl suits generally fit best on lengthier athletic bodies, but if you are ever in doubt, give one of our experts a call.

"Trusted Long Lasting Reputation"

- Maximum comfort
- Trusted brand
- Warm TB4 Firewall
- Additional .5mm thickness
- Smooth skin
- A slimmer fit that might not be the best for bigger body types
Our Take: The O’Neill Psycho Tech is a premium wetsuit that has been a best seller at Cleanline for many years. The Psycho Tech includes innovative features that make it well worth the cost. Technobutter 4 (TB4) is implemented in the exterior neoprene and interior fabric. TB4 neoprene now has graphene-infused yarn adding additional strength and heat retention. Other stand-out features are the TB4 Air Firewall and an aerated section in the smooth skin panels for faster drying and additional stretch.
The F.U.Z.E closure chest zip and 360-degree barrier drain holes make flushing non-existent. O’Neill does a great job of focusing on the small details that make a world of difference—for example, the rubber super seal cuffs with plasma wrist and ankle seals and the pre-feed durable zipper. Once you go technobutter, you never go back - check it out for yourself today!

"Best Sustainable Pick"

- Eco-friendly & neoprene-free
- Durable seams
- Comfortable lining
- Balance of warmth and flexibility
-
I wouldn’t say it is as stretchy as competitors
Our Take: The all-new Patagonia R3 Regulator is one of the best eco-friendly 4/3 wetsuits on the market. Combining high-tech features and sustainability, Patagonia made strategic upgrades that increased comfort, flexibility, and durability.
The R3 is comprised of 85% Yulex neoprene and 15% Natural Rubber. With the Forest Stewardship Council rubber and Fair Trade certifications, the R3 is as environmentally friendly as wetsuits come. The new internal taping and seam reconstruction have substantially improved flexibility and durability compared to older models. Stitchless seam weld technology and interior recycled TBX taping are big reasons the R3 will last longer than competitors. Patagonia’s Iron Clad warranty is another reason to consider the R3 seriously.

"Innovative 3D Design"

- Reliable 3D fit
- Durable internal taping
- Warm Magma+ Thermal lining
- Recycled material
- Slightly more expensive compared to competitors
Our Take: Manera is a newcomer to Cleanline Surf, but it’s quickly established itself as a reliable and tried-and-true brand. Based in France, Manera prides itself on producing high-quality cold-water wetsuits for men and women. With that, let’s take a closer look at the Manera Magma Steamer 4/3 wetsuit.
First off, Manera uses a 3D computer system to design its suits, creating a true second-skin fit. From there, a "triplex magma" of materials makes up the layers of the suit. Re-flex skin is the exterior layer: known for its flexibility and durability. Next, air-foam neoprene makes up the middle layer and is super lightweight while maintaining impressive insulation properties. Lastly, Magma+ is the internal thermal layer. The fleece material provides the necessary warmth to extend your bitter-cold sessions.
Aside from that, the Magma steamer features GBS seams and SD2 tape applied via an air heater machine, which adds durability and flexibility throughout. Unique to Manera suits, phantom straps are located on each ankle, offering an additional barrier against the cold. See for yourself what Manera’s #notevencold really feels like in the Magma Steamer 4/3 wetsuit.

Xcel Drylock 4/3 - $519.95+
"Checks All of the Boxes"

- Warm Thermo Dry Inferno
- Flexible Ultra Stretch
- Wrist seals
- Durable Fusion X tape

Doesn’t come in a back zip option
Our Take: The Xcel Drylock 4/3 continues to impress as one of the most premium wetsuits on the market. With Nanoprene Lite Japaneese Limestone neoprene and Channel Flex exterior, the suit has a good combination of flexibility and warmth. The Channel Flex Exterior is lightweight through less fiber, which in return gives the suit less water weight. Having a lightweight suit that holds it’s warmth isn’t the easiest to come by.
The engineered fit and high-tech materials feel noticeably more refined than mid-range suits, and the Drylock wrist seals and watertight chest zip help keep flushing to a minimum. It's a top choice for surfers who want maximum performance and comfort in chilly water without jumping to a full 5mm. If you're ready to invest in a high-end suit that delivers season after season, the Drylock 4/3 is a standout pick.

Honorable Mentions
Billabong Furnace 4/3: The Billabong Furnace is one of my personal favorite wetsuits. It is a high-performing suit that fits well on shorter, stockier builds. The only reason it isn’t on this list is that we won’t be getting a restock of this product for some time.
O’Neill Mutant Legend 4/3: The Mutant Legend is a great option for those who like wetsuits with or without hoods. It is one of the only wetsuits on the market with a detachable hood.

Best High-End 4/3 Wetsuit FAQs
What makes a 4/3 wetsuit “high-end”?
High-end 4/3 wetsuits stand out thanks to their premium materials, advanced thermal linings, superior seam construction, and performance-driven fits. Expect buttery soft neoprene, quick-dry liners, and strategic paneling designed to keep you warmer and surfing longer.
Are high-end 4/3 wetsuits worth the money?
If you surf regularly in water temps between 52–63°F and prioritize warmth, flexibility, and durability, then yes—they’re totally worth it. A top-tier wetsuit can elevate your comfort and help you get more out of each session.
How long do premium wetsuits typically last?
With proper care (rinsing, drying in the shade, and storing flat or hung correctly), a high-end 4/3 can last 3–5 seasons. The higher-quality materials tend to hold their shape and warmth better over time than entry-level suits.
Chest zip or back zip—what’s better?
Most high-end suits use chest zips for better water sealing and flexibility. Back zips are easier to get in and out of, but may let in more water. If warmth is your top priority, chest zip (or even zipperless) is the way to go.
How do I know which high-end suit is right for me?
Consider your home break’s average water temps, your fit preferences, and how often you surf. Some suits focus on warmth, others on stretch. Reading reviews—or trying one on if you can—helps too. When in doubt, check out our top picks above for the best of both worlds.
