Product Description

When it came to wetsuits and wetsuit accessories, we wanted something warmer, more flexible, better fitting and tough enough to withstand extended use. Looking to what divers, sailors and fishermen had been using all these years to stay warm, in and on the ocean, we tried wool. For comfort and performance, we blend merino wool with polyester, and it’s this merino/polyester blend lining that gives our wetsuits their added warmth without added rubber. We make wetsuits in four weights for all water temperatures – R1® (warm), R2® (cool), R3® (cold), and R4® (frigid) – and in several cuts for men and women. Patagonia wetsuits are decidedly warmer than standard nylon-lined suits, but they also wear longer, dry faster and are made from post-consumer recycled polyester, merino wool softened without chlorine, and no PVC.

  • Durable 5mm and 7mm neoprene laminated to a merino wool/recycled polyester jersey liner
  • Merino wool is chlorine-free, soft next to skin, and stays warm even when wet; recycled polyester jersey adds durability
  • Asymmetrical wrap construction conforms to foot for a snug, comfortable fit
  • Rounded toe provides maximum warmth, and heel lock improves fit and performance
  • Rubber wrap reinforcement on outside and on arch protect feet from rocks; PU-laminated tab on bootie cuff and pull ring on heel for easy on/off; Z-Strap closure design locks foot in place for extra support
  • 5mm bootie cuff reduces bulk and hydraulic lift around ankle; fine-grip rubber soles for traction and board dexterity
  • All seams internally taped to prevent leakage
  • 5mm and 7mm neoprene lined with chlorine-free merino wool/recycled polyester jersey
  • 629 g (22.2 oz)
  • Made in Thailand.

  1. The Warmest Boot Money Can Buy – Rating 5

    Posted by – 21st Nov 2013

I finally got myself a pair of Patagonia R5 boots because I wanted to get the warmest boot I could buy. I like surfing in the really cold conditions because people who are not well equipped don’t stay in the line-up long and everyone else just stays at home by the fire.

I am completely sold on the “merino wool lining” and feel this is the huge difference (the main difference) between this boot and “all the rest”. Every wetsuit company makes excellent boots, but that merino wool just keeps you so much toastier. Just ask the fishermen in Norway!

Toe and heel caps – fluid taped seams – integral bootie keeper – come along strap – all of these features are pretty standard in the industry, but the merino wool for me is the big plus. It’s the reason this boot rules when the ice hits the fan! Also, like all Patagonia products – built to last! They also dry faster, and are made from recycled polyester, no PVCs.

These boots seem to run a bit small. I am a 9.5-10 shoe and I needed to bump up to a size 11.

A negative is the cost, but they’re worth it! Also, don’t pee in your suit because the wool retains odor.

I hope my thoughts and opinions will help you with your Patagonia purchases.

Good Surfing – Stay Warm and In The Water!
