"The R4 has been through some serious changes over the years and it's important to note that this years model is an entire millimeter thicker than the Fall 2013 model. This year you're looking at a 5.5mm suit with merino wool lining which will easily get you through the coldest east coast or great lakes days. If you have owned a Patagonia suit in the past then you know they are among the most durable suits out there, and for Fall 2015 they have stepped it up with updated materials and construction as well as a hefty decrease in price. Despite the decrease of about $100 compared to previous models, I really think we are looking at a better suit. You are not getting quite as much merino wool, but that frees up your arms to paddle easier as well as reduces the over all bulk of the suit. That along with the internal taping on all seams makes this suit a bargain for the price. Lastly I would like to note that after trying this one on in the shop I found the fit to be much improved over last years R4. Patagonia completely revamped their fit and the suit feels great!"
This season the Patagonia R4 Hooded Chest Zip Wetsuit continues to live up to its reputation. Known as one of, if not the warmest wetsuit in coldwater surfing, the Patagonia R4 Wetsuit feels better and performs reliably while continuing to provide unparalleled warmth and durability.
Made with anatomical patterning and high-quality neoprene the R4 meets Patagonia's rigorous standards for stretch, durability and warmth. The torso and thighs are lined with midweight chlorine-free merino wool; a hydrophobic recycled polyester micro-grid thermal lining in the arms, legs and hood dries fast, minimizes weight and offers excellent flex. The floating front-zip provides ease of entry and maximizes freedom of movement through the shoulders and chest. 100% external seam sealing eliminates leaks.
If you are a coldwater surfer and want confidence your wetsuit will keep you warm on the coldest days, the R4 Hooded Wetsuit is the suit you've been looking for.

- Patagonia R4 Hooded Chest Zip Wetsuit Best Suit out there!Review by Johnny Johnny
RatingI purchased an R4 for the chilly Pacific North West Winters here in BC. I've been wearing Patagonia suits almost exclusively for several years, nothing else compares to the quality fit, and warmth of a Patagonia suit, coupled with the outstanding customer service from the Cleanline Team, I'm ready for a busy El Nino winter surf season up here in BC.(Posted on 10/16/2015) 2015-10-16
- Patagonia R4 Hooded Chest Zip Wetsuit So Warm, tricky to get off.Review by Chad Chad
RatingThis is an amazing wetsuit! Extremely comfortable and very warm; I wore the suit all day without any chaffing or discomfort. It's a little tricky to get off, but I flushed it with water down the neck and then it came off easily. Before this, it was quite a struggle.(Posted on 10/6/2015) 2015-10-06

RatingExcellent quality for the cold weather and water. Very flexible and warm. The only issue with this suit is the donning and doffing. It takes some effort trying to get into and out of it. Once your are in, you are good to go!(Posted on 9/2/2015) 2015-09-02

RatingThis R4 has given me a whole new feeling about cold-water surfing, like it's not a chore but something that I actually look forward to. With a long-sleeved rash guard, it's easy enough to slide out of after a session, unlike my old suit. Two thumbs up for Cleanline's service, too.(Posted on 5/13/2015) 2015-05-13
- Patagonia R4 Hooded Chest Zip Wetsuit you get what you paid forReview by upnorthsurfer upnorthsurfer
Ratingthis wetsuit is really warm, simple as that. I'm a whitewater guy up in Canada, in the province of Québec and we have some pretty good whitewater. I have only used mine in like 1 to 4 degree celcius which is like as cold as you can get from my experience for water. The merino wool lining Inside works really good and the best part is it does not really stinks ! The material is nice and stretchy. It's a bit weird to get in but the fit is perfect. I'm about 5'11 and I weight around 175 pounds and the MT is perfect. The lenght for your arm stops right at the end of your wrist and for your ankle it's the same story, just enough that remains to put over your booties and your gloves. In the end, the feeling you get when you first hold it and touch it is just pure quality and attention to details in a piece of gear that is really important.(Posted on 4/25/2015) 2015-04-25
and the big thing is the staff is really cool and you get two gift with it and a letter from the staff with your wetsuit. What could you possibly ask more !!
Thanks again to the Clean line staff you're all awesome.
- Patagonia R4 Hooded Chest Zip Wetsuit Thoughtful updates to an already amazing suitReview by Shabbis Shabbis
RatingJust picked up the '15 Patagonia R4 from Cleanline today to replace my '13 model.(Posted on 2/24/2015) 2015-02-24
First of all, the customer service at Cleanline is top notch. Everyone is friendly, knowledgeable and very approachable in person. The selection of products is amazing as well. I ordered a set of Futures Elevon fins online from them (where hard to find at the time) and I received the fins AND a personal note stating "enjoy the new fins!" That is a diamond in the rough in today's surf industry!
And now onto the wetsuit. Patagonia finally ditched the annoying neck ring that would always get stuck and require a some form of yoga to fish out from behind the back when putting it on. Also, the hood tie down is about 1/10 the size of the previous one, which I never used anyway, but at least it's now out of the way. The chest zipper is more durable and now uses a snap to lock it down instead of a small loop. The neoprene is more flexible and the wool liner has been refined so it's not as thick as previous models.
I've owned every model since their first release, it's quite amazing how quickly Patagonia has caught up with and surpassed the rest of the industry.
- Patagonia R4 Hooded Chest Zip Wetsuit Excellent cold water suitReview by Mattias Mattias
RatingI've been surfing with the R4 in Rhode Island / Cape Cod in the last couple of months, where water temps have been wavering in the high 30s and the air in the low 30s (Dec-Jan). This suit is toasty warm! Hardly feel the cold temps, even after a 2+ hour session. Recommend pairing it with the R5 gloves and booties. LT fits me well at 6'5, 195lbs. We'll see how well it lasts after a couple of full seasons, but no complaints so far.(Posted on 1/30/2015) 2015-01-30
- Patagonia R4 Hooded Chest Zip Wetsuit Patagonia R4Review by John John
RatingReally fast shipping and communication from Cleanline. My suit arrived with a personal, hand written note from the Cleanline staff that packed up my order - this was a really great touch. When you invest in one of the most expensive wetsuits you can buy it's nice for that purchase to be acknowledged by the seller.(Posted on 1/24/2015) 2015-01-24
The R4 is the warmest, most flexible, and comfortable winter suit I've ever warn. I live in Nova Scotia and surf water that's about as cold as it gets. My only negative comment is that the R4 is a little bit more work to get in and out of, but it's worth it for the quality.

We stand behind everything we make, including our wetsuits. But wetsuits require care if they are going to perform and wear the way they were intended. Patagonia is not responsible for wetsuits that are abused or show normal wear and tear over time. Scratches and fading are inevitable, as are tears from the occasional close call with a fin.
Wetsuit Care Guideline:
- Rinse your wetsuit with fresh water after every use.
- After rinsing, fold in half at waist and hang dry.
- Do not store it wet, or in direct sunlight.
- Suit up carefully. We've selected high-stretch materials for their comfort and function. Avoid overstretching fabric and seams. Do not step on one leg to pull the other leg out.
- If possible, change in a plastic tub or on a mat
Our wetsuit warranty does not cover upgrading your older Patagonia wetsuit to a current model. We are continuously improving our designs and materials, but that doesn't make your existing wetsuit unsatisfactory. It just means that the next one you buy will be even better than the last.
Returns are easy! We understand that in some situations returns or exchanges may be necessary. We also want you to be stoked on your purchase. If you are not 100% satisfied with your purchase you may return it for a full refund, or exchange within 30 days of receiving your order.
