The Slater Designs Firewire Sci-Fi Surfboard is an ultra responsive futuristic shape designed by Kelly and Tomo. Traditional, yet still unique in its aesthetic, the Sci-Fi is a straight rail high performance fish outline fitted with a low drag, tech tail. This mash up creates a speedy shape that holds thru turns, allows for insane release and seemingly pivots on a dime. The Sci-Fi works well in an array of everyday conditions from knee high to overhead making it an all around high performing machine.
One distinctive attribute on the Slater Sci-Fi is the eye catching flyer into double bat tail which is what perpetuates the quick, swivel like abilities. The other being the quad concave that runs out the back into a channel on the tail which helps with grip on the face. The concave runs forward to a quad inside single concave which allows for increased sensitivity and impressive planing. Fitted with a dual carbon band, an ultra high density foam stringer and a 5 fin configuration, the Sci-Fi is dialed in for fast paced, modern surf hijinks.

LINEAR FLEX TECHNOLOGY
Firewire's product development is focused on three things: exclusively using epoxy resin and EPS foam cores, achieving lighter and stronger surfboards through sandwich construction, and optimizing flex to enhance performance. Though LINEAR FLEX TECHNOLOGY (LFT) may appear to be a simple construction employing familiar design philosophies found in traditionally built surfboards, nothing could be further from the truth.
LFT incorporates Firewire's new SPRINGER HD, a 0.75" (18 mm) wide aerospace composite that runs down the centerline of the board, representing the next generation in our SPRINGER technology. Unlike the original balsa SPRINGER build which only added stiffness under the front foot, the SPRINGER HD runs the entire length of the board and plays a pivotal role in optimizing flex from nose to tail.
Inserting a high-density material down the center of the board does create engineering hurdles. For example, deck compression over the SPRINGER HD would be less than the surrounding EPS core. Over time, the deck would develop a raised area adjacent to the SPRINGER HD, akin to the ridging effect on a PU surfboard as the surrounding foam collapses on either side of the stringer.
We addressed this issue in two ways. Firstly, the SPRINGER HD stops approximately 10mm below the top deck, ensuring that the surrounding EPS compression will not lead to ridging. Utilizing our proven sandwich construction methodology, we also added an extremely durable material to the top deck of the board. This deck-skin now serves as an additional buffer against the ridging effect while simultaneously working in tandem with the SPRINGER HD to optimize the overall flex pattern of the LFT build. The end result is a durable surfboard with lively flex patterns that will maintain its hi-performance characteristics over time.

RatingI have a 5'10 sci Fi for about 7 months.(Posted on 1/14/2017) 2017-01-14
It's a complex board, but ultimately it's great and worth the "effort" of getting used to it.
I would say it's for intermediate and above surfers.
It took me about a month to get used to it,.
My initial reaction was.. damm, this is a stiff board.
First time epoxy users, be warned ;) .
This board forces you to do the right moves at the right time and at the right place on the wave, otherwise it hangs. It is not forgiving. This is a good thing . It forces you to concentrate and by doing that, you improve.
It makes doing stu Kennedy style tailslides relatively easy, as the extra float the board has because of the epoxy, makes it easier to release the fins, and if done in the right place, keeps the board sliding an extra second or two, as it does not dig in the water as much.
For me this it worth everything. So much fun!!
Elevates your surfing for sure.
If you get a small ding, don't stay in the water. The board sucks a lot of water in. Even if it's a small crack.
The learning has not ended and that's what's gun and interesting about this board.
I definitely recommend it. Like I said, for intermediate and up.
Hope this helps.
