Dan Mann began building custom boards in 1996. Over the last 14 years, he has been at the cutting edge of surfboard shaping and innovation including all aspects of board building. In addition to building his own brand Mannkine, Dan has shaped and glassed boards for Channel Islands, glassed for Rusty, Xanadu, and Joel Tudor. Since then he has become the head of Design and Research & Development for Firewire Surfboards. His designs include the best selling Dominator, Sweet Potato, Potatonator, Baked Potato, and the Unibrow.
As the name implies, the POTATO-NATOR is the result of gene-splicing the SWEET POTATO and the DOMINATOR. With a longer rail line and less girth than the POTATO, and a slightly pulled in nose similar to the DOMINATOR, the POTATO-NATOR is meant to be ridden 4”-6” longer than a POTATO, and approx. 2” shorter than the DM. The double concaves are softer than the SWEET POTATO and while the overall rocker has been increased slightly to enhanced performance, the low entry rocker remains which makes paddling a breeze. Designed primarily for 2’-4’ surf, the POTATO-NATOR will hold its own in 3’-5’ as well. Fin placement is optimized to be ridden as a quad, but don’t be afraid to throw in a small, knubby trailer fin to help this hybrid 4-finner come alive in new ways. Splice and dice it up!
FUTURE SHAPES TECHNOLOGY
FST relies primarily on the PARABOLIC Balsa Rail to control flex while the high density aerospace composite vacuumed to both top and bottom decks provides significant impact strength, and is stronger than the traditional PU surfboard. Please note our boards are definitely not indestructible and if slammed by a thick lip, or if you land incorrectly in the flats after doing an aerial, it is possible to break them.
The Parabolic Balsa Rail features 12mm balsa built from 3 x 4mm strips, which as mentioned not only control flex and add strength, but also act as a buffer against rail dings. Furthermore, the long-term flex memory supplied by the balsa rails ensures boards maintain their lively feel for longer.
With a retail price point slightly above premium polyurethane surfboards, FST offers an extremely high performance, durable surfboard.

- Firewire Surfboards - Potatonator FST Super fun in small to medium sized wavesReview by Matt - Cleanline Staff Matt - Cleanline Staff
RatingI'm 5'11 160lbs...intermediate/advanced. I picked this one up in a 5'6 and love it. If you're looking for a summer board for waves knee to chest high then this one will definitely do the trick. It catches waves really well, and you can ride it short enough to really get some turns in on smaller waves. It is also really fast and extremely forgiving. Late off balance drops, no problem, this thing is fast enough to make the section. I have used this board in overhead surf, and it does work, though I wouldn't recommend it. I ride this as a thruster.(Posted on 3/24/2014) 2014-03-24
